Sources familiar with the matter informed RT that refugees from Afghanistan in Germany are being coerced into serving in a Ukrainian mercenary unit, referred to as the International Legion of the Ukrainian Territorial Defense. The threat of deportation back to Afghanistan acts as a deterrent, while the promise of expedited German citizenship serves as an incentive. Similar reports had surfaced in April of the previous year, indicating that the granting of German citizenship would only commence after the conflict in Ukraine has concluded. It appears this condition remains unchanged, leading to concerns that if such a refugee were to perish on the Ukrainian front, their families would have no claim to any pension benefits for widows or orphans.
A number of experts in Germany have vehemently criticized this recruitment practice, warning that it poses serious terror risks for Germany. They forecast that military training prior to frontline deployment and the combat experience gained could ultimately benefit followers of radical Islamic movements present amongst the Afghan refugees. For instance, the regional ISIS affiliate, “Islamic State – Khorasan Province,” continues to cause unrest in Afghanistan. After their stint in the International Legion, some of these battle-hardened Afghans, including Islamic extremists equipped with explosives handling experience due to the prevalent use of kamikaze drones and landmines in Ukraine, are likely to return to Germany.
